Guelph Alive! seeks out opportunities to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the community. Some of the ways in which we do this are described below. If you would like to learn more about Guelph Alive! or if you know of any opportunities to reach out to our community, please contact any one of our team members via firstname.lastname@example.org.
Living Word is able to share the joy of Christmas with those in need within the Guelph community. The Adopt-A-Family program provides food, clothing, toiletries, and other necessities, as well as games and toys to families who are screened and selected by the local Food Bank. A list of the family members along with their needs and wants are provided to Living Word. The church members purchase the articles and deliver them to the Food Bank for delivery prior to Christmas.
Baskets of Cheer
The past number of years, as Christmas draws nearer, we have been able to share some of our material blessings with Christmas gift baskets for Beginnings. Beginnings Family Services offers a number of services, including pregnancy testing and counselling, parenting and family support programs, a care cupboard, etc.
Living Word puts together a dozen (or so) gift baskets to hand out to woman using the centre during that time. We go shopping, package the gift baskets, and drop them off. The gift baskets are made up of pantry necessities such as soup, crackers, canned vegetables, pasta, granola bars, hot chocolate etc. If you would like to donate so we can make even more baskets, please contact Guelph Alive!
Throughout the year, Living Word prepares and serves dinner for the needy at the Royal City Church in downtown Guelph. Members of Living Word spend the afternoon and evening preparing pastas, salads, juices and coffees and serve them to those in need. This is an important provision for many people in the community, especially during the winter season when they may come in from the cold and enjoy a warm meal.
Kingdom Seekers & Cadets
Kingdom Seekers (formerly “Gems”) and Cadets are Christian clubs for boys and girls aged 9-14. During their bi-weekly meetings, participants and leaders come together to do devotions, crafts, sing and have regular outings in the community as well as badge work. The goals of Cadets – helping boys to grow more Christlike in all areas of life and Kingdom Seekers – involving young covenant girls in interactive learning focused on Bible knowledge – show how the programs strengthen the church both internally and externally.
Both of these programs were started in our church as a logical next step following Vacation Bible School (VBS) at Emmanuel (Guelph East) and Bible Soccer Camp at Living Word (Guelph West): waiting for a whole year to see these kids again seemed too far away! Thus, everyone is encouraged to bring a friend from their neighborhood along so we may share God’s love and word with those who may not be familiar with it.
Guelph Multicultural Event
Living Word has a booth at the Guelph multi-cultural festival in June. Last year was our first year to be there and we are hoping to continue with this for years to come. The event runs Friday night through to Sunday. We have a table set up in a provided tent area. We hope to have some great conversations with our neighbours about Christ and hand out cards with information about Living Word. We also give out flyers inviting kids to attend our Soccer Bible Camp in the Summer. We hope to add to our presence at the event this year and grow on what we learn each year.
Soccer Bible Camp
Each summer our church runs a FREE Soccer Bible Camp the first week of August (Tuesday-Friday) from 8am-12pm. We have different and FUN themes each year so we love to see your child(ren) come back each year! It is for children ages 6-12, and children from our church and the community are invited to attend. We love to see new faces! Registration for this week opens mid May, so check our website for information and how to register online in May. We fill up quickly, so don’t miss out on this great week of soccer, Bible lessons, snack time and more! We are looking forward to it already!
Voice of the Church
Voice of the Church is an radio broadcast outreach program run by the Canadian and American Reformed Churches. It has several broadcasts throughout Canada and the United States, including one here in Guelph. It’s broadcasts may also be streamed, and its previous programs are available through PDF files and podcasts, all of which are available on the Voice of the Church website.
Winter Fun Day
As a follow up to our Soccer Bible Camp, our church hosts a Winter Fun Day during the Christmas Holidays. It is open to all children from the community and our church between the ages of 6-12. It is so great seeing many familiar faces and to see the children connect with each other again! It is a fun day that includes an outdoor winter activity, a Christmas craft, hot chocolate and snack time, singing carols, and a time dedicated to discussing Christ’s birth and the profound impact it has on our lives! Registration opens in November so please check the website for more information and how to register your child(ren) for this free and fun day!
